CHINESE SHIPPING LINE TO LAUNCH FIRST DIRECT CHINA-EUROPE ROUTE VIA ARCTIC
Chinese-controlled container line Sea Legend is set to launch the first direct China-Europe shipping route via the Arctic this week.
Chinese-controlled container line Sea Legend is set to launch the first direct China-Europe shipping route via the Arctic this week.
This new route will cut express shipping times between the two regions by half.
Sea Legend’s First ship will sail from the North Sea Route on September 24, 2025, leaving from Ningbo Zhoushan Port. It will arrive at Felixstowe, Britain’s biggest container port, on October 10, 2025.
The journey is expected to take 18 days compared to the 40-plus days needed for the traditional route around the Cape of Good Hope.
The Arctic route has become accessible due to the loss of sea ice driven by global warming. Over the past 4 decades, the Arctic has warmed 4 times faster than the global average, opening seasonal windows for shipping.
The shorter voyage will also decrease carbon emissions by about 50%.
The route brings environmental benefits in terms of a reduction in emissions and faster transit times, but climate experts warn that it has its risks, including disturbances to marine life, extreme weather challenges and limited infrastructure.
The previous fastest China-Europe express shipping route, which began operations in 2024, took 26 days from Ningbo Zhoushan to Wilhelmshaven, Germany.
